Jikō-ji is the first temple on the Old Temple Route. Steps lead up to an unusual stone gate, the Enmeimon or gate of extended life. Made from 36 pieces of granite quarried from the mountain behind the temple, it’s said that passing through the gate prolongs your life. The much smaller gate by which the route leaves the temple is also of a unique and elegant design.
There are numerous large buildings in a spacious compound. The belfry stands near an attractive scalloped balustrade from where you can look down on the town.
