The Setouchi region abounds with fascinating places to stay, from traditional ryokan with distinguished histories, to thatched rural cottages or merchant homes refurbished as comfortable accommodation. But nothing quite beats the cachet of staying in a castle, with all the ceremony of feudal nobility.
Setouchi has many impressive castles which are open to the public to visit. But recently, several of them have become available as exclusive, luxury accommodation, with special cultural experiences for entertainment.
Nipponia Hotels offers stays at three castles in the Setouchi region, Fukuyama in Hiroshima, Ōzu in Ehime, and Marugame in Kagawa.
For various reasons, the types of stay offered differ. The keep of Ōzu castle was restored in authentic manner and since it isn’t itself a historic building, it’s possible to stay in the tower itself. The keep of Marugame castle dates to the Edo period, so staying there isn’t permitted, but you can stay in an authentic 300-year old samurai home within the castle grounds. Fukuyama Castle keep is a ferro concrete reconstruction and is unsuitable for sleeping, but you can stay in one of the watchtowers.
Whichever castle you choose, you’re treated to an extraordinary experience. From your arrival in the region, you’re cared for by your own personal butler. You and your family or companions are dressed as samurai aristocrats and are welcomed ‘back’ to your castle by your vassals, who are similarly attired in authentic period costume. At Ōzu, there’s a massed musket salute, and you can opt to arrive on horseback. A professional cameraman is on hand to capture the highlights.
Dinner uses locally sourced ingredients and reflects the meals that were enjoyed by samurai. Historical records were consulted to ensure authenticity. The samurai relaxed with performances of Noh and Kagura, and you can experience these impressive heritage art forms in the most dramatic setting imaginable. When morning comes, you’re served breakfast in a beautiful garden setting under thatched eaves. You spend the morning visiting parts of the castle that aren’t open to the public with a knowledgeable guide.
When you stay at one of these castles, you can take satisfaction in helping to maintain the tangible and intangible heritage of the region, and ensuring that it’s handed down to future generations. Since many people are involved in welcoming you, you’re supporting the community in a direct way, contributing to the sustainability of the region as a whole.
Setouchi Tours will book you a Japanese castle stay as a single experience. Or we can integrate your castle stay into a trip that brings the whole region into view, including its fascinating historical and cultural heritage.
