The Temple of the Great Treasure
Home » Temple 44, Daihō-ji
Daihō-ji, The Temple of the Great Treasure, is temple No. 44 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, or Henro. It stands in a forest of ancient sugi and hinoki cypress trees in the area known as Kuma Highland in central Ehime.
A steep slope runs up from the impressive main gate, and there are two flights of steep stone steps up to the main hall. The temple has two belfries and a beautiful bronze statue of the deity Kannon. A huge gingko tree stands in the middle of the precincts and in autumn, its yellow leaves present a dramatic sight.
The trail through the old forests and farming areas of Kuma from Daihō-ji to Iwaya-ji is one of the most beautiful sections of the pilgrimage, and Daihō-ji makes a fittingly attractive starting point.
