Hiroshima is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture and the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshū. With Tōkyō and Kyōto, Hiroshima is one of the cities on the so-called ‘Golden Route’ that most tourists to Japan have typically followed. The city is known for being the first target of a nuclear weapon in history which destroyed most of the city, including its castle. Hiroshima’s main tourist attractions are the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, built in 1915, now known as the A-Bomb Dome, part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, and the reconstructed castle. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum within the Peace Park is subject to long waiting times.
