Myōsen-ji Temple

A temple with a beautiful main gate and a hall dedicated to Kiyomasa Katō.

Myōsen-ji Temple

The Old Temple Route passes in front of Myōsen-ji Temple, from whence the temple approach at a right angle is very impressive. High plastered walls form a sort of tunnel leading to a temple gate in the Ryūgū style with a plastered base and wooden second storey. Next to it is seen the sweeping roof of the main hall built in 1782.

Kiyomasa Hall, dedicated to Kiyomasa Katō, a feudal lord of the Kumamoto domain and a devoted follower of Nichiren Buddhism, is located behind the main hall.

The temple was founded in 1354 by the illustrious priest Daikaku.
