The system of rivers and canals that form the moat of Matsue Castle remains much the same as they were 400 years ago. On this 50-minute boat tour, you cruise sedately beside the impressive stone walls of the castle. The tour operates year round with boats departing roughly every 15 minutes from three locations around the castle. The boat has a roof to protect you from the weather and heating is provided in the cold seasons. In places, the roof is lowered to fit under some of the 17 bridges around the course. The boatman points out the major sites, such as the best view of Matsue Castle, the former residence of writer Lafcadio Hearn, and the Karakoro Art Studio, and even sings local folksongs.
