Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a memorial site dedicated to commemorating the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, generally called the Peace Park, was once a busy commercial and residential district in the centre of the city. The buildings were nearly all destroyed in the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945, except for the A-Bomb Dome. Four years after the bombing, it was decided to turn the area into a park with various memorials. The park including its memorials and monuments, museums, and lecture halls was designed by architect Kenzō Tange. The park encompasses the A-Bomb Dome, the Cenotaph where records of the victims are stored, the Children’s Peace Monument, and a Rest House which was once a kimono shop.

Bordered on two sides by rivers, the lawns and tree-lined avenues through the park make it a pleasant and evocative place to explore.
